The Blue-Winged Kookaburra is a large species of kingfisher native to northern Australia and southern New Guinea.

Measuring around 40cm, it is slightly smaller than the more familiar Laughing Kookaburra.

They are known for their seemingly crazy cackling or barking calls! They are also quite colourful with the males having a blue tail while the female’s tail is brown.

A very alert female is seen here in this shot taken at Canoe Point.
