Distinctive black duck

Birds of Boyne and Tannum with Bob Trask

This attractive bird is the Pacific Black Duck. Although it is mostly brown, the dark strips over the head and the lighter coloured edge to its plumage gives it a distinctive appearance.

They are always found on or near water and their food is mostly vegetarian, consisting of aquatic plants and seeds, sometimes supplemented with small crustaceans and insects.

This photo was taken at a pond at Tannum Sands.
